Introduction to Microfilament Technology
CyPhy Works’ microfilament technology gives revolutionary capabilities to our flying robots. The combination of reliable, consistent, high speed data with continuous power solves most of the operational problems that unmanned systems currently face. The microfilament is impervious to jamming while unaffected by water, power lines, etc. Additionally, because the microfilament directly connects the robot to its Ground Control Station (GCS), communications cannot be intercepted, spoofed, or otherwise compromised from a data security perspective.

We differentiate microfilament from traditional tethered systems. The word tether means “a rope or chain used to restrict movement,” and that is the exact opposite of what microfilament does for its users. Microfilament enables movement, it doesn’t restrict it. What’s so special about it?
CyPhy Works’ microfilament is tiny, more comparable to fishing line than to typical wire; and it has to be if it’s going to be used with air vehicles. However, as we all know, when you make a cable small, it is extremely difficult to get high power throughput, and communications can be challenging as well. The magic in CyPhy Works’ patented system is the ability to get so much power and comms through such a tiny cable. The novel electronics enable use of the tiny cable. The tiny cable enables mobility. Mobility empowers users.
Spooling from the vehicle…
The microfilament is spooled out from the EASE vehicle. Spooling out from the vehicle means that the air vehicle’s movement is never restricted by the microfilament and it eliminates the possibility of snagging, binding, or otherwise tangling. Microfilament strength is not a concern because spooling from the air vehicle means the microfilament is never in tension. Additionally, the microfilament enables the use of sensors that are far superior, with higher data throughput than what other micro UASs are able to carry as a payload. In conjunction with this, the microfilament enables high quality, full frame rate, unbroken, High Definition video; something no other small or micro UAS can provide.
